How to Measure Heavy Equipment for Shipping (So Your Quote Is Actually Right)

Most heavy-haul quote disputes trace back to one thing: the machine at pickup doesn't match the machine that was quoted. Ten minutes with a tape measure prevents all of it.

Length: bumper to bumper, blade included

Measure the longest point front to back, including the blade, forks, counterweight or anything that sticks out. If the bucket adds two feet, those two feet ride on the trailer and count toward legal length.

Width: body first, attachment second

Measure the machine body at its widest (usually across the tracks or tires), then measure the attachment separately. If the bucket or blade is wider than the body, THAT's your shipping width, unless it can be angled or removed. An attachment that angles from 13ft down to 11ft can be the difference between escort vehicles and a simple permit.

Height: ground to the highest point

Cab, exhaust stack, ROPS bar, beacon, whatever is tallest. Remember the trailer adds deck height: a 10-foot machine on a step deck is about 13'6" of total height, which is exactly the legal limit on most routes. This is why quotes ask for machine height, not 'loaded height', the engine picks the trailer that keeps you legal.

Weight: the spec plate doesn't lie

Use the operating weight from the manufacturer's plate (usually on the frame near the cab) or the operator's manual, not a guess. Weight drives axle configurations and permits above 46,000 lbs, and an underquoted machine can be refused at pickup. When in doubt, round up; being 5% over the estimate never causes a problem the way being 20% over does.
