Oversize & Overweight Permits, Explained

Last reviewed September 2026

A permit is a jurisdiction's written permission for one specific vehicle to exceed the normal legal envelope, on specific roads, under specific conditions. There is no continent-wide oversize permit: a load crossing four jurisdictions needs four permissions, each with its own rules, fees, and processing time. Here is how the pieces fit.

Single-trip permits

The workhorse of heavy haul: a permit issued for one movement of one described load along an approved route, usually valid for a handful of days. The application states exact dimensions, weights, axle configuration, and origin and destination inside that jurisdiction; the permit that returns often prescribes the route turn by turn, travel hours, and escort requirements. Change the load or the route and the permit no longer covers you.

Annual and blanket permits

Carriers that run modestly oversize loads on repeat lanes can hold annual permits covering unlimited moves within stated dimensional caps. Annual permits keep routine work moving without paperwork per trip, but they never cover superload dimensions, and their caps differ by jurisdiction. Whether your shipment rides on a carrier's annual authority or a fresh single-trip permit is a dispatch decision you never have to manage.

Trip and fuel permits: IRP and IFTA

Two different systems answer for the truck itself rather than the load. IRP, the International Registration Plan, apportions a truck's registration fees across the states and provinces it runs; IFTA, the International Fuel Tax Agreement, settles fuel taxes the same way. A carrier making a rare trip outside its registered territory can buy short-term trip and fuel permits instead. These belong to the carrier's compliance world; a vetted carrier arrives with them handled, and it is part of what our carrier vetting checks.

Who obtains permits for your shipment

The carrier or its permit service applies, pays, and carries the paperwork in the cab; the costs are built into your quote when your dimensions require permits. What you control is the accuracy of the declaration: permits are issued against the dimensions you gave, and a load that arrives at the scale bigger than its permit invites fines, grounding, and a re-permit delay. Measure honestly, including attachments, and the system works exactly as designed.

Common questions

How long do permits take to get?โ–พ

Routine oversize permits often issue the same day or within a couple of business days. Superload permits involving engineering reviews, bridge analysis, or police coordination can take weeks. Your pickup window reflects the realistic permit timeline for your dimensions.

Do I need my own permit as the shipper?โ–พ

No. Movement permits attach to the vehicle and carrier, not to you. Your role is accurate dimensions and weight at quote time; the rest is dispatch.

What happens if a load moves without the right permit?โ–พ

Fines, an out-of-service order until a valid permit exists, and liability exposure. It is the sort of shortcut that ends carrier relationships, and it is why our quotes price the permit reality up front.

This guide is provided free, for general information, so shippers can see how oversize and overweight moves work. It is not legal advice and not a permit determination. Limits, escort bands, fees, and seasonal restrictions change regularly; before relying on any figure, verify it with the jurisdiction's transportation department or permit office, or a licensed permit service. When you book with LoadLoom, our dispatch desk and your assigned carrier confirm the current rules for your exact load and route; that confirmation, not this page, governs your shipment.
