Oversize Load Permits Explained: Canada & USA Width, Height and Escort Rules

The moment your load exceeds standard legal dimensions, it stops being 'freight' and becomes a regulated event. Knowing the thresholds ahead of time saves you from quote surprises and border delays.

The magic number: 8'6"

Almost everywhere in North America, a load up to 8 feet 6 inches wide is legal without permits. Go an inch over and you need an over-dimensional permit for every state or province you cross. Permits are inexpensive individually ($15โ€“$150 each), but a cross-country move can stack up a dozen of them, plus the administrative time of filing.

12 feet: escorts enter the picture

Above roughly 12 feet wide (rules vary by jurisdiction), most states and provinces require one or two escort vehicles, pilot cars running ahead and behind the truck. Escorts bill by the mile, and they can double the effective cost on a long lane. Some jurisdictions also restrict over-width moves to daylight hours and ban weekend or holiday travel.

16 feet: police territory

At 16+ feet wide (a superload in most places) you're into police escorts, route surveys and engineered routing around bridges and utility lines. These moves are planned days or weeks ahead. Height works similarly: over 13'6" (14' in some western states) triggers route surveys for bridge clearances.

The angled-attachment trick

Here's a real money-saver: many buckets and blades can be angled for transport. A dozer with a 13-foot blade priced as a 13-foot load needs escorts. Angle that blade to 11 feet and you've dropped into permit-only territory, hundreds or thousands cheaper. LoadLoom's heavy equipment form asks for attachment width AND angled width for exactly this reason, and prices on the smaller number when the attachment can be angled.
