Truck Tire & Chain Regulations

Last reviewed September 2026

Tires are where every load meets the law: weight limits are enforced per tire width in some jurisdictions, minimum tread is enforced everywhere, and winter turns tire equipment into a routing question. Chain requirements can hold a legal, permitted load at the bottom of a mountain pass, so this is schedule knowledge, not just carrier trivia.

Condition and tread rules

Across North America, commercial tires must be free of exposed cord, deep cuts, bulges, and improper regrooving, with minimum tread depths that run deeper for steering axles than for other positions. Roadside inspections measure tread at multiple points, and a failed tire places the vehicle out of service until replaced. Tire condition is a core item in our carrier vetting expectations because it is a core item at every scale.

Chains: required, permitted, or banned

Mountain jurisdictions in the west run active chain-up regimes: when signs or advisories declare chain conditions, commercial vehicles must install chains, and passes close to trucks that cannot comply. Other jurisdictions merely permit chains when conditions warrant. Winter corridors through mountains carry chain seasons during which carrying chains is mandatory whether or not they are installed that day. Chain-up delays are real transit risk on winter mountain lanes, and honest transit estimates account for the season.

Studded tires

Studded tires live under seasonal windows and regional carve-outs: permitted in defined winter months in many northern jurisdictions, restricted or banned elsewhere or in southern zones of the same jurisdiction, with rules about stud size and count where allowed. Studs are mostly a light-vehicle topic, but they matter to pilot cars and service vehicles traveling with a winter move.

Why shippers should care at all

Because equipment rules become schedule facts. A January delivery through mountain passes rides on chain law; a spring delivery rides on frost law; both are invisible on a map and decisive on a calendar. When your quote shows a winter transit window longer than the summer one for the same lane, this is the machinery behind it.

Common questions

Do chain rules apply to the load or the truck?โ–พ

The truck. Chain requirements attach to the vehicle and the road conditions, regardless of what is on the trailer; a permitted oversize move waits at a chain-up area like everyone else.

Who checks that the carrier is winter-equipped?โ–พ

Carrier vetting and dispatch. Winter-lane assignments go to carriers equipped and experienced for them, and it is part of why we assign rather than let your load gamble on a load board.

This guide is provided free, for general information, so shippers can see how oversize and overweight moves work. It is not legal advice and not a permit determination. Limits, escort bands, fees, and seasonal restrictions change regularly; before relying on any figure, verify it with the jurisdiction's transportation department or permit office, or a licensed permit service. When you book with LoadLoom, our dispatch desk and your assigned carrier confirm the current rules for your exact load and route; that confirmation, not this page, governs your shipment.
